The Pros and Cons of Lawn Care Edging Materials
Landscape edging does two things. First, it creates a boundary line which divides one section of your yard from another section. Second, it makes your landscape look more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Landscape edging
can also serve as a barrier to prevent grass stolons from flowing over into your lawn.
There are more than one type of lawn edging
you can use. The most notable difference is between the lawn edging that uses a barrier and the lawn edging that uses a trench. Landscapers may get rid of sod in a straight, even line in order to create a border edge. A power edger or spade are good tools to use for this task. They make the creation process easy.
However, the biggest challenge is when you need to maintain the edge. It’ll require you to dig the trench all over again. For this reason, the barrier-style of lawn edging is preferred by most people.
Lawn Care Edging Materials
Natural materials should be considered first.
You can choose natural stone, for instance, because of its durability and aesthetic appeal. On the downside, natural stone is heavy and expensive. If you don’t have the physical ability or budget to deal with natural stone, then you may want to choose a lighter material. Cobblestone pavers fit together in an organized and neat fashion, but they don’t look very realistic.
Of course, the most popular choice for natural material is wood. People love the appearance of wood because it goes with virtually every outdoor setting. Unfortunately, wood rots easily if you don’t treat it properly. All landscape timbers need to have wood preservation treatments applied to them. These treatments may diminish the natural look of the wood, but they’ll help preserve its lifespan.
If you have flower beds, then you can make timber edging surround them. However, pressure-treated lumber is not good to have near your vegetable garden. There have been some health concerns expressed about having them close together, so keep them apart. And if you don’t want to lift heavy objects because of a disability, then find someone who can offer you their physical strength to help install the landscape edging timbers.
The four most common manufactured materials for landscaping edging include brick, concrete, plastic, and metal.
The gardening community is more accepting of metal lawn edging compared to plastic edging. A lot of people think plastic looks cheap and fake. Truthfully, plastic is one of the cheapest materials to use. If you’re on a budget, then go with plastic edging. Concrete is another good choice. But, like natural stone, concrete is very heavy. If you want something lighter and more traditional looking, then go with brick.
Other materials exist for lawn edging too. If you want something more creative rather than practical, then you can explore these other material options. Everything from dishes to roof tiles can be used.
There is a link between raised beds and lawn edging. A shallow wood frame is used for the edging of raised beds. Soil and plants are installed in it later.
